IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a test for those aspirants who wish to move to a foreign country, which has English as its dominant language, for study or work purpose. Basically, it assists in testing the language proficiency of the person and also to check the adaptability level of the person to the new environment.

Why IELTS?

IELTS is one of the most common tests of checking the language proficiency of the candidates. The preponderance of this test has been spread all over the world.

There are two types of IELTS-General & Academic

General is for those who wish to migrate to a foreign country for secondary level education or for work purposes.

Academic is for those who wish to migrate to a foreign country for higher level education or for professional purposes.

Scoring System

  • A band scale of 0-9 is used to assess the proficiency of the candidates.
  • All the four modules are scored separately and then the total is reckoned.
  • The validity of the test is 2 years.

Modules

There are four modules-Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking.

Listening and Speaking are same in both General as well as Academic.

IELTS General

Reading: Time allowed is one hour and the candidate has to attempt 40 questions within that time frame. Various types of questions have to be answered based on the given text. The question can be in the form of short answers, multiple choices, and sentence completion. The given text can be of 5-6 paragraphs.

Writing: Time allowed is one hour and the candidate has to attempt two tasks. Task 1 requires the candidates to write a letter based on a particular situation. The format may be personal, semi-formal or formal. Task 2 requires the candidates to write an essay on a given point of view.

Listening: Time span is 30-35 minutes with extra 10 minutes to transfer the answers to the answer sheet. It consists of 4 sections with a total of 40 questions where the candidates listen to audio using headphones and answer the questions side by side.

Speaking: It takes 11-14 minutes where the interviewer conducts an oral interview, cue card followed by a two-way discussion.

IELTS Academic

Listening and speaking modules are same for both General as well as for Academic.

Reading: Time allowed is one hour and generally, three paragraphs are given based on which the candidates have to answer 40 questions.

Writing: Time allowed is one hour and the candidates have to attempt two tasks. Task 1 requires the candidates to write information based on given information which may be in the form of a bar chart, diagram, table etc. In task 2, the candidates are required to write an essay on given topic.
